Lidong Wang, a research faculty member with Mississippi State University’s Institute for Systems Engineering Research, has been named a “Senior Member,” the highest level of membership awarded by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Joining an exclusive group of IEEE members, Wang has achieved significant accomplishments and experience in teaching and managing research projects based on but not limited to the areas of automated identification technology, cybersecurity and big data.

In a letter of accommodation, IEEE President and CEO, Jose Moura said “Senior Member status is the highest professional grade of IEEE for which a member can apply. It requires extensive experience and reflects professional accomplishment and maturity. Only 10 percent of our more than 400,000 members have achieved this level.”

Wang’s diverse experience includes conducting several research projects at multiple universities across the nation that were supported by The U.S. Departments of Defense and Labor, NASA and the National Science Foundation. As a result, he has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal papers and seven conference papers covering topics such as artificial intelligence and deep learning, big data, cybersecurity, radio frequency identification and biometrics that includes iris, fingerprint and facial recognition.

“All of us are very proud of this well-deserved recognition for Dr. Wang, and I appreciate his many contributions to the ISER team and the university’s growing research enterprise,” said David Shaw, the vice president for research and economic development at Mississippi State.

Before beginning work in 2015 at MSU’s ISER, Wang worked as an associate professor at Mississippi Valley State University, where he also served as MVSU’s Director of the Automated Identification Technology Program. Through the years, Wang volunteered his time in service leadership roles, including Program Committee Member for six IEEE conferences, President of the Electricity, Electronics & Computer Technology Division of the Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE). Currently, he serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Engineering and Manufacturing, and President of the Management Division of the ATMAE in the USA.

"Lidong is a valued member of the ORED and ISER team and we’re very proud of his outstanding accomplishments,” Randy Jones, director of the Institute of Systems Engineering Research said. “This external recognition of his dedication to significant and valued research within the ISER and IEEE community also highlights the excellence of the MSU research organization."

A Carnegie Foundation R1-Very High Research Activity Doctoral University, Mississippi State is ranked among the National Science Foundation’s top 100 research institutions. As the Magnolia State’s leading research university, MSU’s research expenditures totaled nearly $241 million in FY 2017, accounting for more than half of the total in research and development expenditures reported by all Mississippi institutions
